Blind Date

The King rented a room at the Plantation Restaurant in Downers Grove and gave out trophies for most improved and other honors. Every Duffer got a trophy.  What made this event so memorable was the cruel prank that we played on Fred. I hesitate to dig up events that don't fill me with pride, but this one was so funny that I will record Klinger's Virtual Reality account. Most of the Duffers were married back then, but we had a few bachelors that were looking to get married and have all of the fun that the rest of us were having. I fixed Bob Friedlander with a nice looking teacher that came to watch us play. She had a great time that night and accepted a date to a downtown movie. Bob took her to see "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" and they were the only White people in the theater. Bob was uncomfortable, but his date was not since she had been teaching in the inner city for 5 years.

They didn't have another date, but Fred started hounding me to fix him up with a teacher like that. I decided to get out of the "fix me up business" because that can cause problems at work, so I finally told Fred that I had the perfect mate for him and I would have her at the Duffer Banquet. Wally owned a health supply business, so he brought Resusci Anne, AKA as CPR Annie (A training mannequin)  Slime Dog's wife provided a beautiful gown and wig.  We propped Anne up in a chair at a table with the other wives.  Someone put a lit cigarette in her hand.  (Back then smoking was considered glamorous) When Fred showed up, he anxiously asked if his date had arrived.  I pointed to the doll that was surrounded by 6 or 7 Duffers that were engaging her in conversation.  I told him she was drinking screwdrivers so I suggested he get her a drink at the cash bar.  Fred dug deep and bought 2 screwdrivers and headed over to meet his "blind date."  We all laughed when Fred found out that his date was really blind.  Fred took it well since he was used to years of abuse and he would have dumped her anyway for being a smoker.  Fred never asked me to fix him up again.
