Football, Class of 1948

Presenter: Chet Lis

Ted, pound for pound at 5’8’’, 145 lbs., was a very dedicated and dominant player. Playing center and guard on offense and linebacker and guard on defense, he was a three year starter and three year major letter winner. As a senior he earned numerous distinctions, which included serving as a team captain, being selected for the Catholic League North Section All Star Team, and playing in the annual Catholic League North vs. South football game. Additionally, one of the opponent high schools, St. George, selected Ted to their All Opponent First Team and selected him as Captain. Purdue University also selected him as “Outstanding Senior”.

Ted received a football scholarship to Lewis College (now Lewis University) in Romeoville. For the Lewis College Flyers, he played center and guard on offense and linebacker and guard on defense and was a 4 year letterman. He was a Co-Captain and All-Conference Linebacker in his senior year. The Flyers were very successful during his college career, winning three conference championships while Ted was a freshman, sophomore and senior.

He was the head football coach at HTHS in 1956–57 and 1957-1958 and has been nominated to the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame.

After college, Ted went to work for Bishop Sheil at St. Andrews Parish managing the recreation center and working with the youth of the parish. He then had a tour of duty in the Army during the Korean War, spending most of his time working at the Pentagon in the computer section. After the Army, he held various positions including: Assistant Coach at DeLaSalle H.S., Head Football Coach at HTHS, educator at HTHS and working for the mayor of Bridgeview. He then moved to the Elkhart, Indiana and the Edwardsburg, Michigan area where he spent 40 years working for Eaz-Lift Spring Corporation a manufacturer of hitches and various other towing components for the recreational vehicle industry. Brother Ambrose Nowak, C.S.C.

HTHS 1941 – 1947, 1958 - 1961

Athletic Director, Champion for Athletics & Principal

Presenter: Brother Robert Fillmore, C.S.C.

Brother Ambrose was the Athletic Director at HTHS in the early 1940’s, and he returned in 1958 to serve as principal until 1961. As a pioneer of Holy Trinity athletics, he established the football program and revived other athletic programs that were dormant in the early 1940’s. In 1945-46, he brought HTHS from the neighborhood league to the Catholic League for football, basketball and baseball. Brother Ambrose was largely responsible for building up the athletic program at HTHS with new uniforms, larger schedules, a new scoreboard and new bleachers in the gym, and a rented bus. He served as Treasurer-Secretary in the Chicago Catholic League in 1945-46. He played a big part in recruiting the 1947-48 and 1948-49 basketball teams. The 1948-49 Junior Basketball Team won the Fenwick Junior Basketball Tournament.

As a champion for Holy Trinity beyond the court and field, he was very instrumental in building up enrollment by going to grammar schools and talking to students. He was a very good math teacher. He was the Brother who talked with a proud father in the bleachers at a football game and told him how great his son was out there on the field. He was a Holy Cross Brother in the truest sense—he was really seen as everyone’s brother.

Brother Ambrose was a principal three times at various high schools. Joe Gliwa, Class of 1955 and HTHS Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, was hired by Brother Ambrose to teach at HTHS after Joe graduated from Purdue.

Brother Ambrose died on Nov. 21, 1975 in Akron, Ohio of a heart attack while attending a high school football game. He was teaching mathematics at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.

Ronald (Ron) Heiden

Football, Class of 1954

Presenter: Kenneth Watt

Ron, a member of the football team for four years, was a starter on the football team as a sophomore and was a major letter winner in his sophomore, junior and senior years. On offense he played fullback and on defense he played linebacker. Throughout his high school career, he was noted as one of the better running backs in the Catholic League. During his senior year, Ron moved into the top ranks of Catholic League running backs, as he had a two-game stretch where he ran close to 600 yards and scored six touchdowns. The 1953-54 season was one of the most successful football seasons HTHS has ever had with a record of 5 wins and 3 loses.

As a sophomore and junior, Ron was selected by the Chicago Daily News as an All North Section Catholic League Honorable Mention. In his junior year, the Herald American selected him as All Catholic League Honorable Mention. In his senior year, he earned All State Honorable Mention in the Chicago American, All Catholic League 2nd Team in the Chicago American, All North Section in the Chicago Tribune and All Catholic League 3rd Team in the New World. Ron was a member of the Student Council in his freshman year and Vice President in his sophomore and junior years. He received a football scholarship to the University of Illinois.

After leaving the University of Illinois, Ron joined the Chicago Police Department in 1961 and retired in 1991 with 30 years of service. He served as a beat officer, youth officer, youth official, traffic officer, undercover officer and finally lock-up officer. After retirement, Ron started his own indoor and outdoor painting business. The business was successful until he had to slow down in 2001 when he had a single by-pass.

Ron and his wife Loretta have 6 children, 3 granddaughters and 4 grandsons.
