Cross-check this - Granato forced into early retirement
|
Women's hockey at the highest level isn't like the men's. If a
player is cut in the NHL, he can try to catch on with another team.
In women's hockey, Team USA is one team and is the top rung on the
ladder for females. Once a woman is cut from Team USA, there is no
where else to go. Welcome to Cammi Granato's position right now. The night before
the Olympic rosters were released, the sport's all time leading scorer
was told by her head coach, Ben Smith, that she was no longer a part of
Team USA. The shocking news came just after team tryouts in Lake
Placid, where Cammi says she participated and used the tryouts as a warm
up for Turino and the team's next trip, which would be Finland.
She had no idea her roster spot was in jeopardy. Cammi says she never assumed she would have a spot on the roster, but
the two-time Olympian, 15 year vet and captain of the team had no reason
to believe she wasn't a sure thing. Since being released, Cammi is trying to work through the hurt and
not think about Turino. She knows she could help her teammates
recapture the gold and avenge for the silver they won in 2002.
She's heard from almost every single teammate either by phone or e-mail
and to a girl, they also can't figure out why their leader would be
released and in such abrupt fashion. Perhaps circumstances will change over the next month. Perhaps
someone at the USOC or USA Hockey will question Ben Smith about his
decision. Until then, the sport's best known player will remain in
what seems like a lifetime penalty box and start early retirement. To contact the United State Olympic Training Center: www.usoc.org |
