Fall, 2006

On October 27, 2006 Ms. Kouri wanted to take her students to the DuPage River , where they have been monitoring  the water for several years, but the weather was so bad that she asked GLOBE Trainer, Greg Lopatka to bring some samples to the classroom where they measured the PH, conductivity, temperature and turbidity of the water.

On November 2, Mr. Lopatka helped us calibrate our new GLOBE 6 day digital soil and air thermometer, so that we could place it in our new Weather Station.

We calibrated the Thermometer using ice water.

We had to dig a hole for the soil probe.

Mr. Lopatka used a hacksaw to cut the PVC pipe that would protect the soil probe wire.

We pulled the soil probe through the pipe and planted it 10 centimeters under ground.

Once we had the thermometer installed, Mr. Lopatka gave us the Latitude, Longitude and Altitude of our weather station.

We recorded the GPS coordinates, so that the GLOBE scientist, teachers and students will know where we are once we send it to GLOBE.

We used Sling Psychrometers to find the humidity, but it was colder than our humidity chart would allow.

The thermometer with the dry bulb was 0 Celsius.  The wet bulb was even colder.
