We Went on a Troll Hunt!

I took My great grandchildren on a Troll Hunt at the Morton Arboretum. The TV meteorologist were predicting that rain and thunderstorms were going to ruin our day. I learned long ago not to change plans because rain is predicted, so I picked Lennie and Carmela at 10:00 as promised. It rained while we were driving to the Arboretum, but it stopped and the sun came out when we got there. We were able to find 5 of the 6 Trolls before we got hungry, so we had lunch in the Ginkgo Restaurant while the rain started. When we finished, eating, the rain stopped and we went out to find that 6th troll, but we will have to return on another day. We had an excellent adventure.

The first troll that we saw was hurling a huge bolder. We saw a Ford Focus that was destroyed by a 2 ton bolder!

Lennie said, "I don't think Grandpa Ken and Jeff could fix this wreck."

We took one more picture and headed for the next Troll.

We stopped to admire this beautiful painting on our way.

The next Troll was on his belly.

So we walked over to see what he was up to.

When we walked around to see his face, we saw him holding a rope that was connected to a stick that was holding up a trap

Lennie and Carmela went inside of the trap where there was a big piece of yellow cheese.

(Above) You can see the rope attached to the branch that holds up the trap.

(Right) After leaving the 2nd troll, we headed uphill to see the 20 foot tall Troll that looks over the I-88 Toll way.

We walked a half mile uphill to get to this troll.

He was a lot bigger than we were expecting.

Carmela took one more picture of Lennie and me.

The downhill walk back to my car was assisted by gravity.

We stopped to see the queen Ann's Lace flowers that were all over the trail. I told them that the root of the flower was a wild carrot.

I told Lennie that this tree stump was about 60 years old. Being a good scientist, he counted the rings and found that it had 65 growth rings.

We had to stop at this bench that was held up by the letters S T R E N G T H.

They showed off their mussels.

We let our imaginations go wild on this tree. Lennie saw a Llama and I saw a Moose.

Lennie played Tarzan on this White Oak after we estimated that it was over 400 years old.

Carmela took a picture of Lennie with her phone.

Carmela had to take her turn.

We got in the car and went to see the Ginkgo trees.

We stopped under the female Ginkgo where we found some fruit.

This is the Male Ginkgo tree that sends pollen to the females.

I told them how the Ginkgo turns golden yellow in the fall.

We found our 4th Troll clutching this tree.

The kids climbed on his giant club.

After a tourist took this picture, we headed off to find Troll #5.

We spotted a troll taking a nap, so we went to take a closer look.

We found Little Arturs taking a break.

Lennie wanted to climb in his mouth.

Lennie took a flying leap.

And he stuck the landing.

Carmela held Lennie as he did a "Kilroy was here" pose.

Carmela gave Lennie a ride to the car..

Lennie had Mac and Cheese,  Carm had chicken tenders and I had that big cheeseburger.

You can see the rain falling on the lake behind us as we had lunch at the Ginkgo Restaurant.

I had my robot camera take 3 quick pictures of us after lunch.

They managed to change poses in one second.

Carmela helped Lennie get his owl necklace on.

When we got out of the gift shop, we waited for the rain to let up

After lunch and the gift shop we stopped at the Stump Chair.

Lennie took one last picture before we headed home.
