Richard Ciechanowski
Football, Class of 1955

Richard was a popular and competitive football player, a leader, an outstanding student, had great character and was a role model. He was a member of the football team for four years, was awarded a major monogram in his junior and senior years, was co-captain in his senior year and was a monogram club member in his junior and senior years.  He was class president in his sophomore, junior and senior years as well as a member of the student council in his sophomore and junior years. In addition to being a leader playing sports, he was a leader in writing about sports; he was the yearbook sports editor as well as  newspaper sports editor in his senior year. He received the M. J. Rudnick - Senior of the Year Award.

Richard attended Loyola University (pre-dental), 1955-1957 and University of Illinois Dental School, 1957-1961 and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery, 1961. He married LaVerne in 1959.  They have two children, Daniel born in 1960 and Audra born in 1967.  Doctor Richard volunteered into the US Army in July 1961-63, was on active duty at Ft Riley, Kansas; attained the rank of Captain and honorably discharged in 1969; presently is a member of the American Legion.

Doctor Rich and LaVerne settled in West Salem, Wisconsin in 1963 and started a dental practice which turned out to be a forty-year endeavor; retired from active practice in 2003.

Extracurricular activities:
· Boy Scouts of America - Was Neighborhood Commissioner, Cub Master, Scouting committeeman and Eagle Board of Revue
· American Dental Association - Was President of La Crosse District Dental Society, President of St. Francis Hospital Dental Staff, an instructor in the Dental Assisting Program at the (then) Coleman Vocational School
· West Salem School District - Was a member of the West Salem School Board and a Junior High football coach
· Church Activities - Was a CCD instructor and a Eucharistic lay minister.  Currently is a volunteer at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and is a Grand Knight of La Crosse Council 839 Knights of Columbus

Henry Brandt Distinguished Alumni Award

Presenter: Chet Lis '58

Denis has been actively involved in the Alumni Association for 31 years.  His involvement began in 1980 when he was asked by Brother Thomas Henning if he would be interested in helping with a phone-a-thon.  He then was part of a brainstorming group to come up with ideas to make Holy Trinity High School viable well into the 21st Century and create a school mission statement

He is a charter member of the current Alumni Association and over the past 31 years, he has been a diligent participant in the alumni steering committee meetings. He has volunteered for various tasks like: helped with the development of the Alumni Association by-laws, assisted with fund-raising activities, started and continues to be the key person for the annual Alumni Cubs/Sox baseball outing at U. S. Cellular Field, is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee, helps with the Annual Alumni Golf Outing and Alumni Christmas Party.  Denis is also a Hosinski Scholarship Fund sponsor and currently is Vice President of the Alumni Association.

After graduating from Holy Trinity in 1963, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from DePaul University in 1967. He  retired from United States Steel Gary Works in 2003 after thirty five years as a Chemical Analyst and Crew Leader in Coke Operations.  He was a Trustee in the United Steelworkers for about twenty years and a Junior Achievement advisor for about five years.  He is Recording Secretary of an organization of retired Steelworkers (SOAR) and President of an activities club for U. S. Steel employees and retirees.

At the present time, in addition to volunteering for Holy Trinity as Vice-President of the Alumni Association, he is a volunteer for DePaul Athletics, a member of the President's Club Advisory Council at DePaul, and an usher at his parish. He is single and hobbies include model railroading, photography, gardening and home remodeling.
