December 1, 2009 The
last time the Wags played the Blazing Seals, they took a pretty good beating, so
Ed Waghorn sent two of his top scorers back on defense. Dan Lopatka and John
Pallelo rotated with Shultz to slow down the speedy youngsters. John Woodring got the Wags off to a fast start when He took a pass from Tony Letto and fired a shot on net that goalie Engelman could not control, Russ Real pounced on the rebound and put Wags in front just 1:26 into the game. Woody put Wags up 2-0 a minute later on a nice pass from Tommy Zagorski. That lead evaporated a few minutes later, when Shultz was whistled off for interfering. Shultz has a much milder demeanor this year. Last November he got tossed for trying to teach a snot nosed punk some manners. It was the first time I ever saw a guy get disqualified and give his team a 2 man advantage, but he did it. The next day he got a vasectomy and he has been mellow ever since. (Back to the present) The Blazing Seals took

advantage of that penalty and scored a power play goal by K. Smith, who tied it a minute later, Tony Letto gave Wags the lead at 6:46 on a pass from Johnny Pallelo. The Blazing Seals took the lead with 2 goals a minute later to close out a wild first period where 7 goals were scored in 10 minutes! Ed Waghorn shut the door on Seals' scorers for the next 15 minutes while his team posted 6 unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead. Chris Ward started the scoring spree with a short handed unassisted goal just 26 seconds into the second period. Jay Demaria buried a Russ Real rebound. To wrestle the lead back from the Blazing Seals. 24 seconds later, Pallelo gave Wags a 6-4 lead with assists going to Woody and TZ. Less than a minute later, Ward increased the lead when he converted a pass from Johnny P. Tommy Zagorski added 2 more before the period ended with helpers from Woody and Johnny P. Those goal completed 6 unanswered goals and gave Wags a seemingly comfortable 8-4 lead. Just before that last goal, Tony Letto got

under the skin of J. Berrettini when he won a face off after a brief encounter where they had a heated exchange of words. JB got a penalty, then he said some unkind things to the referee and got sent home. He didn't go easily, he came out of the locker room and skated onto the ice while the game was going on. The referee absorbed some more abuse and did not penalize them for too many men on the ice. I guess JB was crazy enough to come after them and they may have been right. He was way out of control. He should give up hockey and take up golf. The Seals made it 8-5 in the closing seconds and then added 3 more in the third period while Wags were coasting on there once big lead that evaporated to 8-7 with 6:50 left to play. Waghorn slammed the door after that to pick up a thrilling 8-7 win. If you want to make a correction, e-mail me at: greg@lopatka.net.
