Duffers Get Help From Toronto

Old Time Hockey!
We have a hard time getting 2 lines for our summer games, so we had to get creative.  We brought in Father Bill Murray for our June game, but Father Bill had a wedding, so Bill By the Way called up "Leapin" Lou from our Toronto affiliate.  Lou showed great promise in Arizona, even though he was guilty of back checking and dump and chase tactics.  We explained that Duffers don't back check and if you dump the puck, you have to chase it.  Lou found that playing Duffer style hockey was a lot more fun than that Canadian brand of hockey that he has in his genes.  He teamed up with fellow Canadians, Geno and Bill BTW for 2 goals and several assists.  Geno had one goal and Bill BTW had 2.  Lou would have had a few more assists if Beak had only missed the Brain a few

Leapin Lou flew in from Toronto and gave  the Reds a Canadian Overload.

times with his frequent shots.  The Reds needed all 5 of those Canadian goals , because Art was on a rampage, scoring 4 all by himself.  Then Thor banged in his own rebound and Brinks flipped one in in the third period, to give the Whites 2 meaningful goals, or as Lou called them "Significant goals".  Those goals gave the White Brains 6 for the night.  Fortunately for the Reds, 2 American players were able to solve the Brain who was having a hot night.  The Maestro fired a silent shot that handcuffed the Brain and hit nothing but net.  The dagger came from Basketball Jones, who was a last minute acquisition.  No one on the white team brought out a red sweater, (The King wouldn't like that) so Tim went into the locker just before the opening face off and put on his red jersey.  That move gave each team 10 skaters and Tim played a fine game, even though Beak gave him a hard time for getting off the ice while the Whites were blasting Tweedy, That move did help him avoid a minus.  All was forgiven when he got the game winner for the Tweedy Reds.  Final Score was Reds 7, Whites 6.  The Meaningful score appeared to go to the Whites 2-1, but Lou is 51 and could qualify for meaningful once the new age numbers are crunched.  That would give the Reds 3.  Bob Morgan wants to pull a Farve and unretire next season.  He too is 51 and hoping the Meaningful age will drop to include him.  Stump was knocking people around while his partner, Terry, tried to avoid the falling bodies.  Frank and Bill were their usual stellar selves,  Magoo, Dennis De Guest and Hacksaw had several chances, but Tweedy was able to make the saves.  Rich Storm had a fine game for the Reds as he has helped  by his partner Koss.  Back hand Johnny set up several goals for the Whites.

  Road Trip!
The Senior Lunch Duffers have selected   Phoenix for our March 2009  road trip.  Uncle Bob did such a great job last year that he left us wanting more.  Huston came in second.  Perry offered to let all of us stay at his house, but he didn't check with his wife, so we figured we would save his marriage by going to Phoenix.  I'm sure we can get a few Canadians to go to Phoenix to play hockey.

Rich Storm claims he didn't do it.

This just in, only 1 minute after I announced our March Trip:

Beak!  Put me down on the road trip list.  I'm ready!

Looking at the pictures below, we are looking more and more like our motto, "A drinking team with a hockey problem". Although there is not a beer in these pictures.  (we waited a long time for our beers this week.  Maybe Wild Wings is in their summer mode.)  All of my pictures lately have been lacking action.  We haven't called on our action photographer, Donna Wisher, lately.  Maybe if she gets a few contributions to her favorite charity, She may come back and "shoot us up".  Click here to see her letter below:

My wife read the following to me as I was getting ready for my Duffer Thursday lunch:

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You have an untamed drive to entertain. Hopefully you'll find a way to do it that doesn't inspire shock or fear. What you're really going for is laughter and lots of it. The group you're in could use a little lightening up.

This applies to quite a few Pisces Duffers, including the Frank and Mike, although those zodiac charts were made up 2000 years ago when the Sun was in the constellation Pisces from February 19 to March 20.  That is no longer true today due to precession (Earth wobbles as it spins). 22,000 years from now, the Sun will be back in Pisces in February and March.

Dear Friends,

Five years…1,827 days…a lot happens in such a seemingly short amount of time.
I’m sure you remember what was happening in your life five years ago.
Sometimes it seems like yesterday, other times it feels like an eternity ago. Five
years ago our lives were changed forever. Five years ago Garrett was diagnosed with
Hodgkin’s Disease ~ a cancer of the lymph nodes.

Today we celebrate five years of life. Five years of friends we have made
through St. Jude and in some cases years of having lost friends we met through
St. Jude.

What will the next five years hold? Will your child, grandchild, distant
family
member or neighbor be diagnosed with childhood cancer and need treatment? If
so, you can be assured that hospitals like St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital
have had a hand in the treatment that child will receive. This past weekend I
attended two St Jude events and was reminded of the outstanding work St Jude
is
doing. Not only are they treating and researching cancer, they're working on
AIDS, influenza, sickle cell and countless other diseases that strike
children.
Children who should be enjoying their youth in health and happiness.

I listened to former Peoria Mayor Jim Maloof, who must be in his mid 80s at
one
of the events. He spoke of Danny Thomas and his desire to help fight cancer
so that "No child should die in the dawn of life." As I listened to Mr. Maloof,
I thought of the first day we were in Memphis with Garrett and that Mr. Maloof had
called and left a message at the hotel we were at. I was quite frankly,
overwhelmed at the thought of the countless hours this man and others have
committed to children who will never know of their contribution. They'll just
know that St Jude was able to cure their cancer. I could go on for hours of
the
many blessings we've received through Garrett's treatment. Mr. Maloof also
encouraged us to un-ashamedly work to raise money for such a worthy cause ~
hence the purpose of my email.

Please help me in my quest to raise money for the hospital of Hope. This will
be my third year of running from Memphis to Peoria. Garrett had planned to
run but a new job made changes to those plans. If you would like to help me with
this, please do so by making a check out to St. Jude and mail it to our
address below. This year has been challenging for fund-raising, many people are hit
with the hard times of inflation and gas prices. Many of the people that made
larger contributions before have cut back. Every cent you can give will help.
I've heard before that it would be better to receive many 'smaller' donations
than one big one. Won't you consider giving what you would spend on one night
of dining out or one beer at the ballpark to an extremely worthy cause?

The runners leave Peoria on Tuesday, July 29th at 7:00am. They'll leave from
the run office on Sheridan ~ feel free to stop by and send us off or honk like
mad when you see 20 or more motor homes departing town towards Memphis. We'll
appreciate it as we'll be thinking about our families we'll be leaving behind
and the exhausting journey ahead of us.
Thank you for your consideration…may your next five years be as blessed as our
last five have been.

 In Hope,

 Donna J. Wisher
