Thor the Wizard!

Romeoville, IL 08/14/09
Attendance 20

The Polar Bear Whites won 2 out of three in the final summer game, thanks to Thor's magical stick.  Thor redirected a pass from Tommy to give the Whites a 1-0 lead late in the second period.  That was a nice goal, but his clincher goal in the 3rd period was an unbelievable chip of a Tommy bullet that went up and over the Anvil's shoulder, then it took a dive under the cross bar and landed softly over the goal line.
Reds lose at Wild Wings Too
The Whites also eked a close win at Wild Wings.  The Reds had 3 fans show up for the food

and drinks, but they were discounted and the Whites took home a disputed 6-5-3 win.
Reds take the Meaningful Contest
The Meaningless contest was not decided until the last 5 minutes when the Reds took an 8-6 lead.  The Whites had 2 goals from Tommy, Art and Thor.

Thor used some Wizardry to baffle the Anvil

Grandpa Ken scored 2 goals for the Reds while playing defense.  AJ and Youngster Dave each had one while Ken's son Jeff flipped in the rest.  Art got an assist on Grandpa Ken's second goal and Beak got an assist on his grandson's first goal.  Hockey is such a great game, when you can get an assist with a break out pass from your own zone.

Jimmy Buffett put on a great show again.

I have never been able to describe a Jimmy Buffett concert, so I will leave it to a professional writer.

Fins to the left, fins to the right
If I have the equation right, the message of the Jimmy Buffett concert experience goes something like this:
Rum + beer + sun + vacation + sex + more rum + beer = fun. (Continued on Page 2)

It was nice to have a pulling guard to deliver the beer.

Other than a private concert years ago, I had never seen Buffett perform live until last Saturday night at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. I'm the casual fan who knows "Margaritaville," "Come Monday," "Son of a Sailor" and a half-dozen other standards -- but I would never refer to myself as a Parrothead, or is it Parrot Head?

However, thanks to a friend who is a MAJOR Parrot Head, I was able to experience the Buffett phenomenon.  Wow. Those people aren't messing around. The parking lot opened at 9 a.m. for the 8 p.m. concert. By the time I arrived, a couple of hours before the show, the lot was nearly filled to capacity. Some of the setups were nicer than my first apartment. Tents, trucks, grills, food spreads, blenders, coolers. Vehicles with parade-worthy decorations and signs.  Lots of colorful wardrobe choices as well. Wacky hats, leis, tropical-themed shirts and dresses. I saw a half-dozen individuals wearing grass skirts and coconut-shell bras.

"It takes a special kind of self-confidence for a man to leave the house and get into his car wearing a grass skirt and a bra."

All of them were men.
Now, I don't know what that's all about, but it takes a special kind of self-confidence for a man to leave the house and get into his car wearing a grass skirt and a bra. You don't even want to think about the conversation that will take place if you get pulled over.
As for the show itself: Buffett's a talented musician and a natural showman who is clearly having the time of his life up there, playing the guitar barefoot and in shorts and T-shirt under huge signs advertising his Margaritaville rum. Between the record sales and the concert tours and the books and the restaurants and the rum and the beer and the clothing and blenders and the Sirius radio station and the salsa and the hummus, the annual income estimate of $40 million that's often cited? Seems low to me.

Every August 11th, I like to go outside, have a beer and watch the Persied Meteor Shower.  Tommy and Tweedy have some memories about those sleep outs.   I'm glad I wasn't in Japan this year.  (See below)

Shizuoka, Japan, August 11, 2009--Mounds of (thankfully empty) beer bottles litter the Sapporo factory floor after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake, which struck just after dawn in and around Tokyo.
