GLOBE Freeze Up Observations Naperville Community Unit School District 203 Mrs. Nolan's Students of Steeple Run School have been documenting the freeze up and break up of Lake Marmo when they meet Mr. Lopatka to collect GLOBE data on Saturdays. Lake Marmo at the Morton Arboretum froze up from shore to shore on December 1, 2007, but on January 8th, the lake started to melt. (Above) On January 11, 2008, all of the ice was melted! (6 pictures below) |

On January 16, 2008, thin coat of the ice formed from shore to shore. The inlet creek was still liquid. On January 19, 2008 we had a low of -20 C and the creek was frozen and we had 5 cm of snow on Lake Marmo. (6 pictures below) |

Information about the GLOBE program GLOBE is and
acronym for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment. GLOBE is a
global environmental program that uses the internet to share student’s
observations and measurements with other GLOBE students and scientist. My Randolph School students have recorded over 8000 environmental
measurements during my 6 years in the program. I was trained for GLOBE at University of
Illinois Urbana March 1995 I served as a GLOBE Teacher Trainer at the following places: University of
