GLOBE Freeze Up Observations

Naperville Community Unit School District 203

Mrs. Nolan's Students of Steeple Run School have been documenting the freeze up and break up of Lake Marmo when they meet Mr. Lopatka to collect GLOBE data on Saturdays.

Ms. Kouri's students of Highlands School have been watching the DuPage River for freeze up. Click here for pictures.

Green Arrow is where our weather station is located.

Red Arrow is where we took the pictures of Lake Marmo from shore.

Yellow Arrow is where we took the pictures of Lake Marmo from the bridge.

The surface area of Lake Marmo is 160,063 square feet (121.9 square Meters) or 3.67 acres with out the interior island.

The length is approximately 792 feet (241.04 M) and the width is 217 Feet (66.14 M) at it's widest point. The depth of the lake is about 10 feet (3.048 M) deepest point.

Looking South East, we observed one wet spot (Black circle just above the date stamp.) See Red Arrow on Map.	Looking South at Lake Marmo. GPS Reading: 216 Meters above Sea level. 41.81649 Degrees North and 88.02234 West	We were surprised to see that Lake Marmo, had ice from shore to shore. This view is looking southwest. Lake Marmo at the Morton Arboretum froze up from shore to shore on December 1, 2007, but on January 8th, the lake started to melt. (Above) On January 11, 2008, all of the ice was melted! (6 pictures below)

On January 16, 2008, thin coat of the ice formed from shore to shore. The inlet creek was still liquid. On January 19, 2008 we had a low of -20 C and the creek was frozen and we had 5 cm of snow on Lake Marmo. (6 pictures below)

Surface temperatures were between -20 and -25 C.

We had a nice turn out on a cold windy day. Lake Marmo was frozen and snow covered, but 3 days later, all of the snow was gone.	The surface of the Lake was covered with ice, but we observed a lot of water flowing under the ice and under the bridge.

After doing our GLOBE activities, we went to see the Iditarod Dogs run.

This GLOBE Star showed up almost every week! Thank You!!

Information about the GLOBE program

GLOBE is and acronym for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment.

GLOBE is a global environmental program that uses the internet to share student’s observations and measurements with other GLOBE students and scientist. My Randolph School students have recorded over 8000 environmental measurements during my 6 years in the program.
