Saturday afternoon, just 12 hours after stumbling in from Wild Wings, I played in an Alumni Basketball game at Holy Trinity High School. There was one injury, a 270 pound guy in his 30s, twisted his ankle in warm ups. That wuss let them call the paramedics. It took 6 guys to carry him down 3 flights of stairs. If I have one good leg, I'm limping down those stairs and driving home slowly with a stop at a bar to delay the wrath of my wife. I feel pretty good today, no pains, no pills. God is good. |

This is my 25 year old grandson 20 years ago when I took him to old Comiskey Park. My students and I got in free and we got free hats.
As Ellis recounted it:
The incident inspired the songs "Dock Ellis" by indie rock singer Barbara Manning, "America's Favorite Pastime" by folk singer Todd Snider, "Dock Ellis No-No" by Chuck Brodsky, and "LSD (The Ballad of Doc Ellis)" by Boston rock band Random Road Mother. He's a boss.
Attempting to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974. In an effort to prove a point to teammates, Ellis hit Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first. The clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis' attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. Ellis' box score for the game reads: 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.[5]
