Nice Turnout for the 2013-14 Season Opener!
We had a nice turnout and an exciting game.  The excitement started on Thursday when The Goalie Pimp sent out an Adam Alert. (Missing Goalie)  Stump had Tweedy and Tom's Men's league goalie, Ed Waghorn, for a few hours until he told his wife.  She nixed that since Ed has a Thursday night game coming up.  Ed is a couple of years younger than the Anvil and would be a good Duffer if he was not married.  T&A got us a high school goalie, not knowing that the Bookie had picked

up Rob off of the waver line.  Rob is that naked legged goalie that has helped us out in the past.  Now we had 3 goalies.  The game started with a fast pace when Greg Z fired a bullet off of the  bottom of the cross bar and into the net to give the Whites an early lead.  Nick answered that goal a few minutes later and that started a wave of goals, by TZ, Terry (2) and T&A that gave the Reds a 5-1 lead.  T&A's goal was a redirection of a blast from the Maestro.  Tommy Z set up both of Terry's goals.  V-Man blew one past the Anvil to close out the first period with a 5-2 score.  It looked like the Reds were in for a laugher, but then Rob kicked the rust off and started saving every shot that the Reds fired his way.  Meanwhile, the Whites started their comeback with goals by Bill BTW and the V-Man to make it 5-4.  Nick finally ended the Red scoring drought late into the 3rd period, but 5 seconds later, t&a took the ensuing face off and made it 6-5.  In the closing minutes, Lil' Bill stole the puck from his dad and roofed a beautiful game tying goal.  The Maestro benched himself after that turnover.  With 38 seconds left in the game, Tommy Z saved the day for the Reds when he found the back of the net with a wrist shot to give the Reds a 7-6 win.

Memorable Moments:

  • Face plant  (Drago) Joe complaining about having to clean the mice crap from his equipment after the long summer lay off.
  • Greg Z's Dad survived 2 full periods in the stands without falling asleep.
  • Beak's locker room account of his Aldi shopping adventure.
  • Nick made many passes.

23 Duffers have Perfect Attendance  (Page 2)

TZ and the Czar are just 2 of the regulars who will be missing next week.

The following Duffers are in the running for the Tim Smith Perfect Attendance Award:
T&A, t&a, Beak, Maestro, Lil Bill, Bookie, Nick, Geno, Czar, Terry, TZ, Cowboy Joe, Anvil, Tom Zim, Fruitcake, Cupcake, Hacksaw, Rags, Bill BTW, Drago, V-Man , Greg Z, Magoo and Rob the Naked Leged Goalie.
5 of these guys will be in New England next week, so we will welcome guests.

Next Game is on Friday the 13th
The last Friday The 13th was unlucky for the Anvil! (April 13, 2012)
The sides looked even at game time with each team having 9 skaters. Then The Czar decided to trade himself to the Whites who already had more speeders than the Reds. When Beak asked him why he left us with 8 slow guys and gave the Whites 10 fast skaters, he said, "You can have Harvey when he comes out."

The bad luck continued to pile on The Anvil when Papa Joe decided to play referee and save himself for the MLF game. Papa Joe lost sight of a puck that was in the crease just as the Bookie came flying in to poke it in just as Papa was in the act of blowing the whistle. (He's 82! When I'm 82, I'll probably lose sight of the puck when I drop it) We haven't had a goal disallowed by a whistle in years because we don't allow our referees to have whistles. Our most dependable referee, 10 year old Dillon Nance, was ticked off after Papa hogged all of the face offs, so he left early and went into the locker room to cool off and get ready for Wild Wings. I hope he didn't have a beer. After that goal was disallowed, peg leg Brinks scored a pair to add to solo goals by Greg Z, The Czar and Rags. Beak was so happy that Nick was starting to get it as he was passing every time he got the puck, but nobody could finish, so late in the 3rd period he told Nick, "Go score some goals!" He picked up a Hat Trick in the next 2 shifts to make the final Meaningless score 5-3. Brinks had the only Meaningful goals.

Memorable Moments

  • Brinks had 2 more goals on one good leg.
  • Geno made his return. Nick asked Beak where Geno had been and when he was told that he had eye surgery, Nick replied, "On his good eye?" Beak said, "Think about your question." Nick just laughed. After his Dad had a talk with him, Nick did not take a shot until Beak said, "We're are down 5, start shooting."

The year 2009 had 2 Fridays fall on the 13th.  On November 13th, Hacksaw had a puck bloody his mouth while Nick had good luck and scored his first goal.  The Brain stayed home that night because he was lit up for 15 goals on Friday, March 13, 2009.

The Year 2012 also had 2 Fridays fall on the 13th.  Friday April 13, 2012 was bad luck for the Anvil when he was down 5-0 until Nick was unleashed and scored 3 late goals.  Eddie was spectacular the next night when he beat the Rampage and captured the MLF Cup.

Friday July 13th, 2012 was good luck for Tweedy and Brinks as they both had hat tricks.  It was bad news for Geno since he showed up with only one shin guard and did not play.

9/13/02 Cammi sets up her Dad and Beak, then scores another to give Brian a 6-2 win. It was good luck for Beak and Boris earlier when as they started the day with a scenic flight over the Joliet and Plainfield area. It was a successful flight, because they were able to walk away from the plane after the landing. (A full digital video of the event is available upon request)

Beak would like writing Soccer News, he would never have to ask, "who scored" after a 1 to nill shoot out game?
