This was my original Duffers' jersey. The following account came from Jim "the
King" Miceli: "Rich Schoenberger was
playing with us on Sunday mornings. When I was complaining about
all the different color jerseys Rich mentioned he had some old cotton
practice football jerseys at his shop. When he said they would cost us a
couple of dollars apiece I immediately perked up. When I called him to get
the jerseys Rich said he would put numbers on them and maybe a name like
the Downers Grove Duffers, which sounded great to me. While on the phone I
was looking at a Blackhawk schedule and asked Rich if he would be able to
put the Hamms' bear on the jersey. He said he knew exactly what I was looking at
and said, "no problem". The jerseys showed up with Downers Grove on the top
the bear in the center and Duffers on the bottom. I thought it was great.
We got away from the traditional rat-hockey multicolored jerseys almost
from the very beginning." |

When we were playing in the early 1970s, we paid $5 to play each week
when we showed up. When The King brought in the Duffer Jerseys,
He wanted $6.00 for a pair. I only had $3.00 on me, so I got the blue
one pictured above. I don't know who got the Red #9.
I wore number 9 like Bobby Hall during the 1970s, until Bill Giffune
came to town and joined the Duffers. He wanted number 9, so I just
put another 9 and became 99. maybe Gretzky copied off of me I don't
know.😜 |
