Goalies (Past and Present) Rule!

Romeoville, IL
December 14, 2012

Attendance: 26

Brian "The Brain" Turned in a Gem!
Harvey didn't score and he was dropped from the first line by the Czar.  Here is what really happened. Beak asked the Czar if it was OK to have Frankie, a 19 year old female, skate with us.  Mike replied, "She can play as long as she is on your line." When Harvey went out to take his place on the first line, Beak gave him the bad news.  Frankie is the daughter of Agi, our one and only female referee.  Frankie played AAA youth hockey and attended many of Cammie Granato's Clinics.  She did not have a problem keeping up with the fastest Duffers.  She was thrilled to wear the Red #21 Granato jersey.

Gary "The Ghost" Casper has Stump and the Brain under his spell.

Harvey was not the only one who had a problem scoring as the goaltending was outstanding.  The Anvil brought his "A" game, but Brian brought his "A Plus" game and led the Whites to a thrilling 4-3 win. Brinks had the only Meaningful goal to give the Whites a double header win. Tommy "t&a" Ambrosia, Nick DeJesus (Anvil's hairy son) and Greg "Circus" Zerkis scored the other goals for the Whites. Tom "T&A" Ambrosia, Tommy Z and Nick the Prick were the only Reds to get one past the Brain, who made some great saves.  He picked off a blast from the Maestro that Beak deflected toward the top shelf.  There was one shift when the Reds peppered him for 2 minutes straight before he could get a whistle.  When he finally did, he took his helmet off and cooled off with some of that secret stuff that goalies keep in their bottles.  Whites 4,  Reds 3.

                     Memorable Moments

  • Fred refused a revision of the Bobka Factor.  The Czar was trying to be nice when he told Beak that the gap between Fred's ineptitude and other senior Duffers has diminished over the years and He should not be abused by having a factor named after him.  When Fred got wind of that, he balked and almost said a swear.

  • T&A may have been the reason that the Brain settled down after 2 early goals.  (He slammed into Brian and knocked off his cage) He blamed his son for the collision.

  • Another big crowd at Wild Wings.
  • Stump Tribute generated 75 hits in 2 days.

Tribute to our Goalies

Hockey Goalies are the most abused players and under appreciated people in the world.  They pay money to get shot at and when they make a great save, the shooter calls him names.  When they get scored on, they are taunted and laughed at.  Where would we be without our goalies?  Last week, we paid tribute to Stump for his years of dedication as a player and goalie coordinator. (The Duffer Goalie Pimp) This week, We will pay tribute our other goalies.  The Anvil, The Brain, Tweedy, Jimmy Bones, Slimedog and Gary The Ghost.

When I Googled "Slimedog", this picture came up. Tom "Slimedog" Kowalkowski is in the center of this picture that was taken in Tampa Bay Florida.  Tom was given the name "Slime Dog" by a disgruntled shooter when Tom robbed him.  Tom was also known as the Tooth Fairy since he has a basement filled with teeth.

Gary "The Ghost" Kasper played for us in the 1990s.  He learned The Braille method of goaltending when he became near sighted. This method was named after Louis Braille (1852) teacher of the blind. Braille goaltending was developed exclusively by Slime Dog and Stump under very controlled conditions. Normally, vision is a very important part of goaltending. Duffer goalies have had to adapt, because Duffer defensemen always back their 4 foot high rear ends into the 4 foot high goalies, thus removing all of the advantages of vision. Their nasal passages are also rendered inoperative, so all they have left is hearing, touch and taste. They listen for the slap of wood against rubber, flinch and wait for the feel or taste of the puck. Once this happens, they must react quickly to try to grab the rebound before one of those lecherous forwards bangs it in. Braille goaltending usually fails after 3 rebounds.

Jimmy Bones was a street hockey player that was begging to play for a real team.  His step Dad, Rags, helped his dream (or nightmare) come true last rear.  Now he is one of our most dependable backup goalies.

Braille Goal Tending

Did you ever hit Stump with a screen shot and hear his reply when you yell, “You never saw it!” He laughs and says, “I didn't have to, you hit me!”
Here is a reprint from a pre computer, 1978 Duffer News, when Stump was a twig.

Dear Duffer Advisor,
I hear rumors that Stump and Slime Dog are going to open up a goalie school using the Braille Method of goaltending. Please tell me, what in the world is Braille Goaltending?
Dilated Duffer

Dear Dilated,
The Braille method of goaltending was named after Louis Braille (1852) teacher of the blind. Braille goaltending was developed exclusively by Slime Dog and Stump under very controlled conditions. Normally, vision is a very important part of goaltending.
