Too Many Guys that Like to Watch!

Romeoville, IL
May 3, 2013

Attendance: 17

Another Poor Turnout runs up the Duffer Deficit!
We skated 5 on 5 and had to add 11 year old Dylan so that we could have 3 subs on the bench. (Players, not sandwiches)  When 17 guys show up, $340 is not enough to pay for the one hour of ice.  We have to pay $525 for our 90 minutes.  We lost $180.00

The Game

Magoo got the Whites on the board on his first shift when he beat the Anvil like a rented mule.  There was no Crown Royal in Eddie's blood.  Mini Wheezer spoiled Tweedy's shutout when he trickled a shot that meandered along the goal line until Tweedy tapped it into his own net.  We tried to give the goal to Dylan, who was right there, but he denied any contact with the goal.

Geno and T.O. provided the winners.

We will give him an assist on that goal just for his honesty.  Tom O'Connor gave the Reds a 2-1 lead, but Greg Z tied it and we had a 2-2 game going into the third period.  (Sober Goalies are no fun) Geno scored early in the third when he beat Tweedy on a break away.  Terry Crash Nance, redirected a pass from Brinks to tie the score at 3-3.  The Czar gave the Whites a brief lead with a blast from the point, but Tommy Z answered that with a blast of his own to knot the score at 4-4.  Mini Wheezer  scored the game winner with a legitimate shot that went in without any help from Tweedy.
Reds 5, Whites 4.   Meaningful Score, Reds 2. Whites 1.

Memorable Moments:

  • The Nances had a Father son crash.  (Dylan was pressed into service to give the Red's 8 skaters)
  • Beak put on his White Jersey.  He did not piss off Eddie since his only shot went wide.
  • Thanks to Koss and Mini Wheezer for calling in sick.  That kept us from setting an all time low record.
  • You have one more week left in the season, get off of the couch and have some fun.

Money Matters

Only 17 duffers showed up. Poor attendance has the Duffer Organization in the Red for the first time in 40 years.  We may need to have a new fee system.  Maybe $15 to skate, $20 to stay home.  That would get some wives pushing some lazy guys out on Friday night

Money Math on Page 2

John K called in sick so that he could play on Friday.

Money Matters

Mike signs a contract in the Fall that commits him to $19,950 for 38 weeks.  If you skate 38 weeks and pay dues, you contribute  $835.00 to our debt.  Guys  that skate 30 weeks contribute $675.  If you skate one week then rest a week you contribute $455.  If you skate once a month, you have only pay $255 for the year!  In the past few years, we have lost guys that paid $835 every year.  Tim Smith, Mini Wheezer and Stump went 2 years straight with perfect attendance.  Fred was another guy who never missed until he was injured.  We lost Frank who was always in the 95% group.  Boris was in the $600 club until he fell in love with Florida.   Papa  Joe and his sons  have combined to contribute a full share.  We need to replace these guys so that Mike can pay for our ice.
When I was younger with kids playing and me coaching, it was hard to make it every week.  I was lucky that I never had to travel for work and my wife was always happy to get me out of the house on Friday night.  If I was sleeping, she would wake me up and say, "You better get moving or you will be late for hockey."  What a woman.
Maybe we will have to put in a minimum annual fee for guys who can't make it that often, but still want to keep this great organization going.  I don't know, but we need to make some changes next year.

Do you remember Peter Sellers' last movie?  He played a simple minded gardener, Chance the Gardener" became "Chauncey Gardiner" who lived his whole life, tending the garden for a rich guy. Other than gardening, his knowledge is derived entirely from what he sees on television.  His famous quote was, "I like to watch."  Don't be that guy when the Hawks are on TV on Friday and you have to decide between, play or watch.  Do what Duffers do, Play the game then watch the highlights at Wild Wings with your friends and a beer.
