Pitchers' Duel!

March 16, 2010 Italian Style Vs. Wags at Center Ice

The last time these 2 teams met, pucks were going into the net every few minutes.  The Wags took that game by the score of 14-9.  This time, the Goalies ruled!  Chris Ward gave Wags the early lead when he was set up by Jay DeMaria with 9:08 left in the first period.  They increased the lead two minutes later with a nifty power play goal by Pete Hornik while Bennie Stallone was sitting in the sin bin for tripping.  Assists were awarded to the defensive pair of Chris Schultz and Boyd Prusha.  The Italian Style cut the lead in half with 4:11 left in the period when Killer Cagney roofed a shot over Ed Waghorn's shoulder.  Five

minutes into  the second period, Rusty Roman tied the game at 2-2.  With 5:25 left in the period, Vinny Glovenco scored a short handed goal to give the Italian Style a 3-2 lead, as the Wags players seamed to take the period off.  It appeared to these 70 year old eyes that Prusha tipped that goal past his own goalie, but he claims that he never touched it.  Boyd did claim the next goal as he blasted it past the Italian Goalie a minute later.  Tony Letto and John Woodring got credit for setting up the goal that tied the game at 3-3.  The next 14 minutes featured great goal tending by both goalie, as each team fired 11 shots on goal and only one made it to the back of the net to break the tie.  Dan Lopatka took a pass in his own zone from his defensive partner, Chris Schultz, and made a coast to coast rush, avoiding several defenders before roofing the game winner with 5:21 left to play in the game.  The last five minute were not easy, as Ed Waghorn was shouting "defense" while his team mates were crashing and pinching to keep the puck in the Italian Zone.  Between shouts, Ed had to stop several three on twos and two on ones, as Hornik and Lopatka were sitting for roughing and interference respectively.  Tony helped the short handed situation buy uttering some selected Italian slurs that drew one of the Italian Style guys into a 2 minute penalty.  The game ended when one of their

knuckle heads broke the blade of his stick, then threw the shaft into the stands in frustration as the puck was cleared.  He was given 10 minutes to bring the game total to 28 penalty minutes.  Only 8 for the Wags What an exciting finish!
