Duffer News

Johnny B gets a big Win!

Romeoville, IL January 16, 2015  Attendance: 20
Bill BTW is Perfect! (Fred says)

Beak got a complaint from Bill BTW while circling the ice during warm-ups.  Bill said, "I noticed that you don't have me down for perfect attendance.  That doesn't bother me." (Beak thought," then why are you bitching to me," but he let Bill continue his rant) BTW went on to say that he never reads the Duffer news, but Lou in Toronto pointed it out to him.  (Beak thought, "throw your smart phone in the toilet and get a computer that lets you see pictures in high resolution and allows you to read a news letter on a screen that is bigger than 3 inches) Bill went on to confess to missing one week at Wild Wings, but he went on to say Fruitcake never goes to wild wings, so how does he qualify?  Beak smiled and said,

Bartender Sam came over to deliver our beers .

"I'll check it out when I boot up my computer."

Here is what he found:
Perfect attendance after the 10/31/2014 game: After 8 games, Six Duffers have Perfect Attendance: Speed Racer Jeff, Bill BTW, Beak, Czar, Fruitcake Fred, and V-Man.

Beak missed the following game when he went to Detroit to do some research work for our road trip. Beak dropped from the game perfect attendance list but kept his Wild Wings string alive when we partied at the Levonia Wild Wings on that Friday. (See Visual proof below) The Duffer news for that week was made possible thanks to Tom Ambrosia who reported the following:

Perfect attendance:  After 9 games, only 4 Duffers have Perfect Attendance: Speed Racer Jeff, The Czar, Fruitcake Fred, and V-Man.

Bill should have complained after that game while it was fresh on T&A's brain.  Beak was in Detroit, so he can't say one way or the other.  He just knows that T&A helps him every week when Tom is available and his reports are always semi true and perfect for yellow journalism.
Beak consoled Bill at wild wings by telling him that Fred can never win the "Tim Smith Perfect Atten

dance Award" because that requires you to be at every game and show up at Wild Wings every week.  Tim "Basketball" Jones did that in 2006 and the Award was created, only 3

Thor was back, but he got stoned.

Page 2   (Uncle Bob loved multi page newsletters when they arrived by fax at work.  It helped his AM-BM)

(Continued from Page 1) duffers have ever done that.  The Czar and Beak did come up with an "Imperfect Attendance Award" for Fred last summer, but he went home before the awards were presented. The award is in still in my garage along with the Klinger Krash award that BTW refused to take home. That was a first, every other winner of that prestigious award took it home and proudly displayed it for their family and friends until the next Duffer Picnic.

The game was not as exciting as the warm-ups.  The fear of having to play a 4-on 4 game was not realized as the Reds had 9 skaters and the Whites had 8 at game time.

TO had the 7th goal and V-Man didn't tick off TZ.

The sides were pretty even until Tommy Z came in late and joined the White squad.  The Anvil was back after recovering from an ailment that was caused by drinking Crown Royal out of his skate boot to celebrate the birth of T&A's 1st Grandson.  We still don't know if he had Hoof and Mouth disease, athletes tongue or Foot in Mouth disease.  Anyway, it was great to have him back and he appeared to have cured whatever the ailment was with 6 shots of Crown Royal straight from the bottle.  He played great until the disinfectant wore off in the 3rd period. The Whites ended up putting 7 pucks past him.  The Czar and Bill BTW had 2 each while Commander Ken and Barron the Piercer scored goals to run the score up to 6-0. Tommy Z had a nice set up on the Piercers' goal.  It looked like Johnny B was heading for his first Duffer shutout, but Geno spoiled that when he nailed the crossbar late in the second period.  The puck caromed down and into the net to get the Reds on the board.  John "Cupcake" Bobka added 2 goals late in the third period to cut the lead to 6-3, but #33 Big Buff O'Connor made it 73 with 18 seconds left in the game.

Memorable Moments:

Jeff Speed Racer lost his Perfect attendance. Fred says that Bill BTW has not missed a game and he ought to know because he is perfect. Fred made the Commander's Guest feel right at home by insulting him and sending him to the other locker room.  We never questioned Fred's memory until Friday when we were talking about Lake Placid and Fred chimed in with a story about the millionaire Indians that played in that tournament. The Indians were shocked when they saw Skip walking though the locker room wearing a flowery woman's house coat.  When Skip was asked when he started wearing that, he replied, "I've been wearing that ever since my wife found it in my hockey bag."  Thor let Fred finish the story and then said, "Fred, those Indians played in the Reno tournament, not in Lake Placid.  We played the Godfried Goodtimers and the Laurentian Old Puckers in Lake Placid." Fred said, "Oh yea you're right."
We only had 9 duffers show up at Wild Wings.  The Czar questioned Beak about the poor turnout from the senior locker room when only Thor, Tattoo Mike, Barron and Beak made it to BWW.  Then Beak pointed out that his locker room only had 5 night owls.  Then Beak told him his Great granddaughter Carm showed up and tied the score.

Perfect attendance: Bill BTW and Fruitcake Fred. still have Perfect Attendance:

Carm came in and did some gymnastic moves for us after the game.

Beak's great granddaughter took this picture then did a few hand stands.

Sam, one of our favorite waitresses is now a bartender, so she made a delivery.

Carm played Goalie on Sunday morning and Tweedy's son Luke played goalie on Sunday night.

All in the Family. It looks like the goalie gene is in the Lopatka blood.

THE 5 TYPES OF HOCKEY PARENTS

BLOG — BY  ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2014 2:52 PM

In an ode to hockey parents here is a fun look at some of the characters we see around the rinks–here’s to you Mom & Dad and everything you do.

Every team is different and no two parents are alike but over my 15+ years of playing hockey there are a few parents that seem to always make an appearance no matter what level you play, they are tried, tested and true. Simply put—they are hockey parents.

1. The Lone Wolf- Often found roaming lobbies and keeping a low profile, the Lone Wolf is never to be approached lightly. He is often that one dad who always finds himself a nice empty corner of the rink safely away from any other spectators or parents. Often found in the classic windbreaker, jeans and running shoes combo, the only time he uncrosses his arms is to bang on the glass or grab another sip from his XL Double-Double from Tim’s.

2. The Circus Clown- Like an entire circus act, these types of hockey parents often seek each other out and travel in a pack, directly in contrast to the behavior of The Lone Wolf. These are the parents who are found dead center ice in a pack of 4 or 5. The herd usually consists of almost exclusively hockey moms. They will be decked out in team colors sporting blankets and sharing thermoses of hot chocolate. You will most definitely hear them before you see them by way of their trademark cowbell and air horns. When these parents show up you know the circus is in town.

3. The Coach- This parent type normally manifests itself in the hockey dad but has been known to appear in the odd hockey mom. Characterized by constant hotstoving in the stands, this parent is never too shy to add their two cents on how the team should be coached and who should play. Often they are known to lose their voice half way through the season due to constant screams of “SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT” and “PASSSSSSSS THE PUCKKKKKKKK”.  In rare cases, these parents even start their transformation early in their son or daughter’s career. You know who they are, they are the ones yelling “DUMP & CHASE” or looking for harder back checking during Timbits minor hockey games.

4 .The Phantom- Just like the name implies, this is the parent that you never see for all intents and purposes they are an elusive shadow.  The only time you will ever see this parent is when they are peeling out of the parking lot leaving a trail of dust and gravel. Or, in the winter, when they almost put the family van into the snowbank as they Tokyo Drift their way out of the parking lot. On rare Occasions they will make an actual appearance inside the arena. However, this is only after the practice or game is over and they are peaking their head into the dressing room to tell their kid to “HURRY UP!” or “DON’T BE LAST”.

5. The Northern Star- Just like their name suggests, The Northern Star is always there. Day in day out they are there every single tryout, practice, game, tournament and fundraiser. They are quiet, they keep to themselves. They often bring other family members along, brothers, sisters, uncles and grandparents. Normally reserved, these parents stay clear of hockey politics and don’t get too caught up in the game. Like the straw that stirs the drink, they are there to mingle and socialize.  Often you will find that this is their first child in hockey and have not yet been soured and jaded by countless long hours on the road and in the rinks along with not having consumed thousands of cups of terrible arena coffee.
