The Czar had one of our best looking Parrot Heads to design a Duffer Logo for our 40th year.  Shelly (Pictured below) came up with this great logo for our new bags. Thanks Shelly! We went from "XXX" to XL in just 10 years.  10 years from now, we will be reduced to just an "L".

The Czar Pops for New Bags

Slim Turn Out, Great Game!
With a full moon approaching at midnight, our regular goalies went into hiding, leaving Stump with a game day headache.  He sent out an e-mail plea for help at 8:30 A.M. Beak got his Brother's grandson and Dave the goalie got Rob, Tweedy already said he would play goalie, because the Full Moon has been good to him in the past except last February, when his Dad scored on him twice.  Now we had 3 goalies so Tweedy stayed home.  Magoo then contacted a friend who had a 12 year old goalie son with professional pads.  They must have been Darren Pang pads for short people. The first period was all goaltending.

Magoo shows off his new bag

The Reds had trouble getting out of their zone, but Dan "Kid Pittsburgh" Smith was stellar, kicking out everything until late in the period when V-Man's neighbor, Ultimate Fighter Marty came in down the right wing and forced Kid Pittsburgh to hug the right post.  He feathered a perfect Frisbee pass that eluded Dan's paddle and landed right on V-Man's stick for an easy back door goal.  We thought about a headline that read, "V-Man Back Doors Kid Pittsburgh", but that had an ugly sound to it.  The Reds finally got out of the zone in the final minute of period one when the Czar coughed up the puck to Geno.  Our one eyed Canuck said thank you and fired it past our guest goalie, Rob, to tie the game at 1-1 after one period. We added T&A's son Thomas and the Bookie's son Nick to give each team 10 skaters in period 2.  The Whites continued their assault on Kid Pittsburgh in the second period and built up a 3-1 lead with goals by Art (assisted by Lil' T&A, who is now the same size as big T&A)  Art returned the favor by springing T&A for a break away goal.  Rob felt sorry for the kid with the fancy  Darren Pang goalie pads, so he let him play goalie and take some shots, the kid was up to the challenge when he robbed  Geno and Bill BTW with quick glove saves.  The kid was starting to think he could be a Duffer until Beak took a break away pass from Kid Pittsburgh and streaked over the Blue line. Rags got back and caught up with Beak (I know that is hard to believe) and forced him to go wide.  Beak fired a low rocket that  mystified and eluded the kid to make the score to 3-2 after two periods. DOM (Dirty Old Man) Hacksaw immediately called Beak a pedophile for violating the kid, but someone had to Dufferize the kid and keep him from bragging to his Pee Wee friends. It is hard to brag when a 71 year old guy with titanium hips scores on you.

The kid covered the net like Stump.  (He was 4 feet high and 6 feet wide with those pads) Marty made it 4-2 with a pass from V-Man , but Geno got an assist from Mini Wheezer and kept it close at 4-3 until  Rags made it 5-3 with a late goal.  Papa and T&A claimed assists on that goal by e-mail.*

Kid Pittsburgh turned in a 3-0 Meaningful Shut out.

Bill BTW and Joe
*T&A E-Mail:

I passed it from the corner to the point, if Papa Joe got a piece of it on the way that would qualify for an assist. His memory is probably better than mine. Or he gave me the pass in the neutral zone and I drop passed back to the point after I crossed the blue line. I know Rags said nice pass after the goal.

The USA Hockey's National Team Development Program announced Monday it has named Don Granato head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team.

"I'm thrilled to be a part of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program," Granato said. "The NTDP is highly regarded in hockey circles not only in our country, but throughout the world. I look forward to the challenge of helping some of our most talented young players reach their full potential. In addition, my wife and I are excited to be part of the Ann Arbor community."

Granato's coaching career began in 1993 when he was named interim coach of the United States Hockey League's Madison Capitals. He went on to become the first-ever head coach and general manager of the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers for three seasons (1994-97), where he led the Gamblers to Anderson Cup titles as the USHL regular-season champion on two occasions (1996, 1997) and, in 1996, helped the franchise capture its first Clark Cup as the league's playoff champion.

Granato then coached in the East Coast Hockey League, where he led the Columbus Chill for two years (1997-99). He then moved on to serve as head coach of Peoria for one season and guided the Rivermen to the Kelly Cup as the ECHL's playoff champion. He was inducted into the Peoria Hall of Fame in 2009.

Granato spent 2000-05 as head coach of the Worcester IceCats, the American Hockey League affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. During that span, he became the winningest coach in franchise history with a 191-130-45-14 record, while leading the IceCats to the Calder Cup playoffs in four consecutive seasons (2000-04). Granato received the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award in 2001 as the AHL coach of the year.

"The fact that he's been a successful developmental coach both at the junior and professional level fits perfectly with our program," said Scott Monaghan, senior director of operations for the NTDP. "I know the players, parents and community will really enjoy Don."

Granato spent last season as a scout for the Vancouver Canucks. Prior to the 2010-11 campaign, he served as head coach of the Chicago Wolves, the AHL affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers (2008-10), and was also an assistant coach for the NHL's St. Louis Blues (2005-06).

As a player, the Downers Grove, Ill., native skated for the University of Wisconsin from 1987-91. While a Badger, he helped Wisconsin to the 1990 NCAA title. Granato went on to compete professionally for two seasons with the ECHL's Columbus Chill (1991-93).

Granato replaces Ron Rolston, who spent seven seasons at the NTDP.

"Don will be a terrific mentor to the best young players in our country," said Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. "He's excited about the opportunity and we're very pleased to have him at the NTDP."

Carole and I went to Bloomington for the U16 Softball Nationals last weekend. Michelle had and unbelievable tournament with 6 singles, one double, one triple and one Home Run at the World Series in Bloomington, Indiana. She scored 5 runs and batted in 5. She batted .563 and was on base 68% of the time. I gave her a hit on a spinner that fooled the fielder, (an impartial scorer may have given her an error) but heck, I'm her grandpa and I'm certainly not impartial. She still only made 5 outs in 5 games. I have the video to prove it. All of the girls had a weekend to be proud of.

August 18, 2011 Tropical Storm Harvey was named and has turned into a full-fledged hurricane as He barreled across the Caribbean gathering strength.  He expected to raise havoc in the bars and dance halls in Belize and the southeastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico by Saturday night.

Thank You Card

Evi sent Boris a thank you card for the gift that the Duffers gave her for getting us a picnic permit. He scanned it and printed it out, unfortunately, Boris quit buying colored ink when President Bush left office.

Here's to 40 more great years

The Rose

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed

It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed
That with the sun's love, in the spring
Becomes the Rose
.
On the first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being..

She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?'

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze..

'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked.

She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...'

'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me..

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she revelled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.
Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.'

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ' We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it!

There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.

If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.

Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.

The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets..'

She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.'

She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago.
