Nick loved the buffet and promised to be back next week.

If every time you see moonlight on a lake, you think of a dancing bear, and you sing gently, "Frommmm the land of sky-blue waters,".....you might live in Wisconsin.    Jeff Foxworthy (Fred says you should be in Minnesota not Wisconsin)

Everything you need to know about Comet PANSTARRS

The long wait is nearly over. Northern Hemisphere skygazers haven't seen a bright comet with a long tail since Comet Hale-Bopp graced the night sky in 1997. But if predictions hold, Comet PANSTARRS (C/2011 L4) should be a nice naked-eye object and look impressive through binoculars after sunset starting in the second week of March. Stay tuned to www.astronomy.com/panstarrs for complete coverage, including finder charts, observing tips, videos, photos, and more. Read more.

The Comet PANSTARRS Curse?

Romeoville, IL
March 8, 2013

Attendance: 20

Comet Takes it's Toll!
Comets have inspired dread, fear, and awe in many different cultures and societies around the world and throughout time. They have been branded with such titles as "the Harbinger of Doom" and "the Menace of the Universe." They have been regarded both as omens of disaster and messengers of the gods. Pope Calixtus III excommunicated Halley's Comet as an instrument of the devil. The death of Kings were blamed on Comet visits.

In 1996 We were treated to comet Hyakutake on our Hayward Trip.

The King of the Duffers even changed his title to Bhagwan during the Comet visits in 1996 and 97. Comet Hyakutake lit up the dark skies of Hayward Wisconsin when we were there on a road trip in 1996.  The following year, we went back to Hayward and we were treated again to an even brighter comet when Hale-Bopp lit up the sky.  What has this got to do with Duffer News you may ask?  Well, Comet PANSTARRS (C/2011 L4) was in the western sky when we took the ice on Friday and strange things started happening.  The Anvil was over served and tossed another meaningful shutout. The Reds had 5 Meaningful goals, Beak scored twice, Thor and Klinger left early with mysterious whole body ailments that were cured with a few extra beers. The Reds scored 10 goals! BBTW had 1.24 goals, Beak Nick and Tom O each had a pair, Geno and V-Man had one each.  Tommy Z had 8 assists.

Bill confessed that 2 of his 3 goals were diminished by the Bobka factor, but Beak was too tired to do the math while having a beer at Wild Wings. He gave him 1.24 goals for the night.  Both teams were rotating 3 defensemen, so there is a good chance that Fred was out there for more than just 2 goals against. The final score may have been 4.266 with the Bobka factor. The Whites only got 2 shots past the inebriated Anvil and t&a had the boat a dem. Fred just missed scoring the third goal several times.  That would have given the Whites an 11-10 win.

Memorable Moments Caused by the Comet?

  • Terry lost an edge at full speed, went down and slid for 20 feet and had time to decide what part of his body would be best to crash into the boards.  He elected to have all 800 foot pounds of force absorbed by his derriere.    Continued on Page 2

Comet Hale-Bopp gave us a show in 1997 in Hayward, WI.

  Page 2

(Continued from Page one)

  • The Czar had 2 crashes and when Beak called them Terry crashes, He removed his mouth guard to say, "Those were Klinger Krashes!"
  • Thor had a swing and a miss that had us reminiscing about the time Harvey stole the puck from his team mate, T&A, in Columbus, causing him to swing and miss harmlessly.  Thor was not so lucky, He hurt his back and had an early beer. See Columbus 2012 Memorable Moments.
  • Klinger also had an all body injury and left early, causing the Whites to pick up T&A on wavers. Tom ended the night with one win and one loss.  In 1995, Coughenhour got traded from a losing team after two periods to even the sides.  He did a great job and helped his new team lose the game.  He was the first Duffer to lose a double header.
  • Klinger was Senior MVP when he brought us beer while Brinks was in the land of underwater specialists.
  • The Anvil confessed to Beak that he killed the bottle of maple flavored Crown Royal before the game.  He  played a great game and had some help from posts, crossbars and whiffs.
Hayward Road Trip History (New Page)

This year March has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This happens once every 823 years. This is called money bags. Based on Chinese Feng Shui.

(I say it happens every time March 1st lands on a Friday.  I don't think it will take 823 years for that to happen do you?) It will also happen many times to January, May, July, August, October and December.
