Goalie Strike Averted!

Romeoville, IL
February 24, 2012

Attendance: 22

Less than 2 Weeks until Columbus!
The Goalie in Chief was livid when He thought that Beak had benched Brian so that we could give a new goalie a try-out for Columbus. Here is what really happened:  Brian  called Beak on Thursday and told him he would take Friday off if we could get the new goalie to take his place. Beak made a call to Bob and got a replacement.  When Stump found out Brian wasn't benched by Beak, he called off the goalie strike.

Berserk had 2 goals

Doc got the game off to a fast start when he went coast to coast and flipped one past the Anvil.  Papa Joe got an assist by dropping the puck to Doc in his own zone.  Chris Berserk gave the Whites a 2 goal lead when he followed Doc's formula and blew past all of the Red defenders and scored.  Bob, our guest goalie, had a shutout going late into the 1st period until T&A spoiled it with a slap shot. Bob felt a little better after Beak told him losing his shutout was a good thing for his try out, because we wouldn't want to take a goalie with a 0.00 save percentage to Columbus.  Nick scored a couple of his usual unassisted goals to give the Reds a 3-2 lead.  He then did something unusual when he passed the puck to a wide open Magoo who gave the Reds a 2 goal lead.  Magoo returned the favor and set up V-Man to make the score Reds 5, Whites 2.  Berserk made it 5-3 when he fired a low shot that T&A redirected up and over the Anvil and into the net.  Nick got that goal back a few minutes later.  82 year old Papa Joe poked in a 2 foot putt to give the Whites a 1-1 meaningful tie and a final score of 6-4.

Memorable Moments:

  • Brian takes a week off to allow Bob the Bionic Goalie try out for team Columbus. Bad News, Bob's Boss just said "no trips for you!"
  • Papa took a spill and took T&A with him, then became the first 82 year old to score.
  • Mazurk paid for his Columbus with cash, then took some abuse from the Czar.
  • Nick got punished several times for speeding. The Czar beat him up again.

I had a great time celebrating my 72nd trip around the Sun.

George Carlin on HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. I play hockey every Friday and stay out late with my cheerful friends.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's. I enjoy writing and posting the Duffer News every week and can't wait for spring so that I can get out and till my garden.  I will be able to do that early this year, my frost tube measured only 1cm of frost in the ground.

4. Enjoy the simple things. I have been enjoying my snow blower and taking pictures of the beautiful snow

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. I do plenty of that every Friday night and every time I see my grand kids.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive. I have done this

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. I certainly have done this . Our grandkids make me smile, my garden gives me food and a work out.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. I love my new hips.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is. I leave for Columbus on Thursday March 8th with my son and friends , click here for more Road Trips

10.Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity. I have done this, but I will do this more often now that I hit 72!

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Hockey takes my breath away every shift.

George Carlin's Views on Aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four and a half!" You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

"How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . .You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony . YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're Just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30 ; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half!"
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!
