September 1; Muzzy passed away. He gave us more laughs than any other Duffer.

This was 1997 when we brought up Robby Granato to give the Bombers 2 Illinois ringers.  We filled most of the coach seats and avoided a fun tax.  This is the year that Muzzy shocked Hayward church goers when he came out of the church and boarded the bus with toilet paper streaming out of his pants. Read More....

Duffers Honor Muzzy!

Romeoville, IL September 8, 2017  Attendance: 23

The Game

Birdman Dan scored the first goal of the season.  V-man scored the first goal for the Whites.  Tommy Z, Bill BTW and Olgi Joe each had 2 goals to give the Reds 7 goals.  Rags had 2 goals and Grandpa Ken had one for the Whites to give the Whites 4 goals.
The game changer came in a pre game deal when the Czar sent "2 goal" Harvey to the Whites for a player to be named later.  That player turned out to be Joe "Olgi" Mazzarella who showed up late in the first period and scored 2 goals for the Reds.  What a deal. Final score.  Reds 7, Whites 4.

Beak and his son Ken give a toast to Muzzy!

Muzzy Memories

Jeff Lopatka: "I was about 5 the first time I met Muzzy, he told me he was retired and I asked dad if he was retarded. Muzzy, my Dad and grandpa laughed out loud."

Dan Lopatka shared one that I never heard from 37 years ago when he was a 10 year old.  He said that Muzzy offered to take him home after a Duffer game so that he could get to bed at a decent time for a big game on Saturday.  If he stayed with his dad, he would  not get home until 2:00 AM. Dan said that Muzzy thought I could tell him how to get home, but I had no clue.  We were heading north on 294 and Muzzy asked if he should get off at Ogden.  Dan told him that he was not sure.  Dan doesn't remember how he got home in those pre-Cell Phone days.

***Downers Grove Reporter***July 25,1992  (We were in a summer Men's league in Downers Grove)

61 year old Muzzy gave the packed house a thrill as he just missed the post with a shot.  Earlier, Muzzy had the bench in laughter when he tripped a Beer Cat Right in front of the bench. The Referee looked at Muzz and didn't have the heart to call a penalty on a guy 40 years older than the kid on the ice.  The kid looked at the

referee in hope of a call, instead The Muzz said "Get up son", and the Duffer bench went up in laughter.  For the rest of the story, go to: http://www.lopatka.net/headlines/page3.html

Muzzy Memories Continued

Mini Wheezer shared a memory from our 2003 Las Vegas trip.  "Muzzy was the reason that I won $1500.  Muzzy wanted to go to a shady part of town. Uncle Bob and I dropped him off there but we felt that we should stay and keep an eye on him.  I soon hit a Jackpot" Muzzy was bad luck for Beavis when he said "Booga booga" and made Beavis crap out.
Fred shared a Muzzy 3 stooges memory. He said that they argued about the spelling of "Nyuk Nyuk Nyuks". Muzzy and Fred were big Stooges fans. Check out Muzzy's Hockey Stooges shirt pictured here.

In the locker room, I shared my favorite Hayward Story from 1997.
We were threatened with jail if we couldn't stop laughing at 3 in the morning.  It was a "bum rap", you know we were innocent.  There was a young team down the hall that was getting crazy and the security guard was sent up to squelch the disturbance.  On his way past our door, he heard the laughter of 8 or 9 Duffers who were enjoying a night cap in the second floor room near the stairs. He knocked, and Muzzy opened the door to see who wanted to join in the fun. When he saw it was a uniformed guard, he said, "Get out of here!" as he slammed the door.  15 minutes later the cops came and Muzzy locked himself in the bathroom.  Beak told the cops that we would be breaking up and promised that they wouldn't have anymore trouble.
Arrest were later made down the hall when they took away a couple of the guys that Dan and Robby were scheduled to play on Sunday. You could say that the Duffers had a positive influence on the win.
The Conversation on the bus turned to "what if".  What if we were arrested for laughing.  Would we be charged with a felony or a misdemeanor?  Where's Magoo when we need him?  Would they confiscate our laugh paraphernalia?  The rubber puke matt and the fake dog turd.  What if we flushed our electric joy buzzer down the toilet and someone took a leak, would he get a shock?
We were waiting outside the church for some of the guys that went to Sunday mass.  We made our count and

came up one short as usual.  Where's Muzzy?  Brinks answered," he's in the church men's room".
All of the parishioners were looking at us in amazement, as they had never seen a bus that big, picking people up from church.  Their amazement turned to shock as  Muzzy came running out of the church with toilet paper streaming out of his pants.*  We laughed some more.  Three days of non stop laughing was starting to hurt. We need help!  Berserk wondered if Sally Struthers would go on TV with a plea for help.  Sad Duffers would be shown with flies buzzing around them.  She would ask for money to help us buy new laugh paraphernalia.  Whoopy cushions, puke platters, joy buzzers and dog turds that don't attract flies.

Rick Dzingel asks Muzzy where he can buy a helmet like that.

* Muzzy used the "Toilet paper gag" for a smaller group when he showed up for our bowling match with his hockey bag.  A few minutes later, he came out of the men's room with toilet paper coming out of his pants. That disrupted our opponents.  The Duffer Bowling team introduced defense to the game of bowling thanks to Muzzy. Thor used that gag in 1982 when we were playing in Lake Placid.  He skated out on the ice with a long stream of toilet paper flowing out of his pants as he circled the ice.  That was in the famous Olympic Rink!

Muzzy went to Hayward with us in 1997

We planned to report to Midway Airport, at 10:00a.m. on January 22, 1999.  Donny Granato will meet us at the Columbus Airport  at 2:00  (EST) and take us to the Rink for our 3:30 p.m. ice time. We never got to play that game.

Our flight was delayed for hours by fog, so we had a few beers and pizza.  We we got noisy and reached the limit of the manager, so Muzzy and Larry started cleaning up the mess that some over served Duffer made.

Muzzy even helped a delivery guy unload cases of beer.

Muzzy started to win over the manager and he was offered a cookie.

Klinger decided that we needed real food.

Berserk got his hand slapped for looking at Beer Nuts' Pizza.

It started to rain and we watched our hockey bags get wet.

We finally arrived in Columbus at 7:00 for the 7:30 game.

We went to Columbus to see Donny Granato coach his ECHL team, the Columbus Chill. We were delayed at midway by fog, so we arrived just in time for the National Anthem. Donny sent a van to pick us up at the airport.  When we arrived, Donny was standing on the bench looking at the flag with his hand over his heart when  Muzzy went to him and banged on the glass to let him know that the Duffers had arrived. Donny had a hard time fighting back a laugh, but he managed then laughed when the Anthem was over.

We went into the TV truck and had some fun.  You can read about our Columbus Road trip at:

 http://www.lopatka.net/1-29-99-181/index.html

Donny did get us ice the following night and Mike "The Nailer" scored his first Duffer goal. Donny also got us a goalie (Right) who was escorted to the locker room by the Trooper. He also met us at the door when we arrived for the Columbus Chill game and showed us to our seats. Muzzy slipped away to great Coach Granato with a bang on the glass.

We formed a hockey stick arch for the Berserks.

Leave it to a goalie to screen Muzzy's Mug.

(Right) My son Dan loved Muzzy, he told me he wished that he could have gone to high school with Muzzy and Thor.

We went to Green Bay twice in 1995

Donny Granato was coaching the Gamblers.

Muzzy's Daughter Paula is always happy to greet her dad's friends in Arizona.
