Waghorne Stiffels the Reds!

Romeoville, IL March 16, 2018  Attendance: 28
We had a goalie scare twice.  Bear got a friend to agree to fill in for him, but then that friend dropped out 6 hours before game time, so Beak was able to get 61 year old Ed Waghorne to sub for the sub. The Whites got an early lead when Chris "Berserk" Mazurk beat the anvil when he poked in a rebound. Late in the first period, Crash Nance gave the Reds a 2-0. Early in the 2nd period, Grandpa Ken raced in on his titanium knees and beat the Anvil to give the Whites a 3 goal lead.  It looked like a rout was on the way until Geno "Cyclops" Cromwell walked in all alone on Waghorne and beat him in the 4 hole (Top left corner). That stopped the bleeding for a while, but Viorel "V-Man" Tamasi gave the Whites a 4-1 lead going into the 3rd period. That lead looked pretty safe with Ed "The Wall" Waghorne stopping everything and swallowing up rebounds. The Reds got a break when Tommy Z hit Ed in the chest with a blistering slap shot. The puck fell to his skates, so while Ed looked everywhere to locate the puck, Kyle "Linebacker" Barczynski raced in for the tap-in goal. Kyle has great speed, but some

Wags Goalie Ed Waghorne bailed us out and beat the Reds.

times he forgets to stop.  He played football for most of his life, so he plays hockey like a football player. We were relieved when he didn't slam into the 61 year old Waghorne.  The 2 goal lead was stretched to 3 when Grandpa Ken launched his patented turn around  slap shot into the Anvil's 4 hole.  Tom "St Patrick's Day" O'Connor answered that goal to get the Reds back within striking distance, but Nick "DeGuest" made a very unduffer like move and beat the Anvil in the 3 hole to make the score 6-3.  Nick is a friend of Young Hammer and he played a very controlled "Son of a Duffer" like game until he gave into temptation and scored that goal. Waghorn was feeling great about his performance holding the Duffers to 3 goals just 24 hours  after holding a very talented team that was laced with young Espositos to 3 goals the night before.  Then Beak ruined his night when he fired an ice hugger from the top of the circle that found it's way through a maze of players and through Ed's 5 hole to make the final score, Whites 6, Reds 4.

Brian Stewart
told me that Anthony's Wife, Colleen, is in the Hospital. I sent a get well card to the Czar.  I

will be in AZ so the Czar will print it up and get it signed by the Duffers.

Memorable Moments:
Beak and Brian still have Perfect attendance at the rink and at the bar, but Brian will be the only one in line for the Prestigious Tim "Basketball Jones" Smith Perfect attendance award when Beak heads to Phoenix and ruins his perfect attendance on Friday.  Brian needs to stay perfect for 6 more games to become the 5th recipient of the Award. Only Tim, 2006,  Stump 2009, Mini Wheezer 2010 and Beak 2011, have their names on the plaque.  Fred "Fruitcake" Bobka has had "Imperfect Attendance" several times where he showed up for every game, but missed every chance to go to the bar.

My grandsons signed free agent contracts with the Phoenix Whalers team to play in the Las Vegas Hockey Classic Tournament. They beat the Pasadena Crown City Royals 3-2  in a shoot out in game 1.  Speed Racer Jeff Lopatka had a goal and Jeff Lopez*  had 2 goals.  Monet Mike had 3 assists. They beat the San Jose Leftovers 6-2 in game 2, with Jeff scoring 4 times. They then beat the Wyoming Wedding Crashers 7-1 in game 3 to set up a championship game against Pasadena Crown City Royals. The Wailers made sure that this rematch was not going to end in a shoot out as they jumped off to a 4-0 lead to walk off with an 8-2 Cup winner.

*Jeff Lopez played with Mike at Downers Grove South.  He works at the Canland rink and filled our puck bag last week.

Baylee Wellhausen, (Left) captain of the Wisconsin Badger women's hockey team, had a heart breaking finish to her great season when they lost in double overtime to Colgate in the Frozen Four.

Harvey and Buckshot Bob Morgan showed up to join Frank, Klinger and Beak for lunch at the Vault in Lemont.

Uncle Jeff had fun scoring in Las Vegas.

I watched Carmela get a goal and assist.

He was born on May 20, 1935.  My son Dan was born on his birthday in 1970.

We shared a lot of Muzzy pictures in the last Newsletter.

This was 1997 when we brought up Robby Granato to give the Bombers 2 Illinois ringers.  We filled most of the coach seats and avoided a fun tax.  This is the year that Muzzy shocked Hayward church goers when he came out of the church and boarded the bus with toilet paper streaming out of his pants. Read More....
