6 years ago, when Ryan Dzingel just turned 20 years old, He skated with us when we went to Columbus. Ryan is now 26 years old and he scored his 22nd and 23rd goals on the last day of the season.  That tied him for the most goals for the Ottawa Senators.  Click on the pictures below to watch the videos of his goals.

OTT@BOS: Dzingel dances by Khudobin for second goal and 23rd of the season.

I just wish that Ryan Dzingel's grandpa Rich could be here enjoying Ryan's great success. Lung cancer took Rich away before Ryan was born. I played football with Rich at Holy Trinity High School in the late 1950s. Rich never played hockey, but I was able to persuade him into getting his sons some Franklin skates so that they could play hockey on my back yard rink. Ryan's Dad Rick went on to play hockey with the Duffers Hockey club and he skated in the San Jose Shark Tank with us. He got Ryan into hockey as a mite and the rest is history. I created a web page with My Memories of Rich Dzingel at: http://www.lopatka.net/Rich%20Dzingel/index.htm

Kevin Wellhausen Mr. Lopatka I just read this newsletter that you wrote about your friend Rich.. very moving.. I want to thank you for coming to see Baylee play at Wisconsin during her college career!! It was awesome seeing you and some of the other Duffers at those games!!

Bear Puts Reds in Hibernation!

Romeoville, IL April 13, 2018  Attendance: 28
Thank you Johnny B for answering the "Goalie Alert" call.  John was expecting to be rusty since he has not played goalie in a while.  His concern was eased early when he made a great save and his defense-man Bill BTW flipped a backhander from the blue line that found it's way past the Bear to give the Reds an early lead. One shift later, Monet Mike fired a pass from the corner to Geno that was deflected by Bear's big stick into his own net.  JB continued to make one great save after another while Birdman Dan and Mike scored to give the Reds 4 goals in the first period. V-Man was the only White guy to get one past Johnny B. Johnny and the Reds were cruising into period 2 with a 4-1 lead.  It looked like an easy win was on the way, but then Mini Wheezer, his high school buddy, showed up to lend his support. The Bear started making one great save after another that frustrated Red shooters, while White shooters went to work. Grandpa Ken took advantage of a turnover from a fellow gear head and scored to make it 4-2. Oh No, a 2 goal lead! Birthday boy Rob Ziv made it 4-3

Goalies  ruled on Friday

when Johnny B made a great save that popped up in the air. Rob used his baseball skills to swat it in before it hit the ice. V-man scored again in the third period to tie the game while The Bear continued to frustrate the Reds. It looked like Grandpa Ken scored a go ahead goal when a rebound went off of his skate and into the net, but the young referees waved it off stating that there was a distinct kicking motion. (His Granddaughter Carmela was neutral). The video replay did not show enough to overturn the call on  the ice. Late in the 3rd, Kramer's Bookie look alike, Anthony, scored on a rebound to give the Whites their first lead.  The Reds were trying to pull Johnny and add a 6th attacker, but Crash Terry scored an insurance goal to foil that. The Reds did pull Johnny with 1 minute to play but the Bear continued to make great saves to give the Whites a thrilling come from behind 6-4 lead. The Bear finished the game with more than 2 periods of shut out goal tending. Back in 2009, when the Czar put Scott Wayne's face on Mike Moffitt's face, this picture showed up on a Google search for "Mike Moffitt" Seinfeld. I guess Face recognition was in it's infancy.

Memorable Moments:  Brian Stewart is still perfect.

Rob Z celebrated his 48th Birthday

We had a drink to toast Rob Ziv's birthday and his goal.

We gave thanks to my grandson for bringing us beer, and we thanked his daughter for being our referee every week.

September 1; Muzzy passed away. He gave us more laughs than any other Duffer.

He was born on May 20, 1935.  My son Dan was born on his birthday in 1970.

We shared a lot of Muzzy pictures in the last Newsletter.

This was 1997 when we brought up Robby Granato to give the Bombers 2 Illinois ringers.  We filled most of the coach seats and avoided a fun tax.  This is the year that Muzzy shocked Hayward church goers when he came out of the church and boarded the bus with toilet paper streaming out of his pants. Read More....
