Old Goalies Never Die!

Romeoville, IL January 5, 2018  Attendance: 20
Way back in 1972, when I was 32, I centered a line with 34 year old Dick Bajlavik and 35 year old Huffer, who was wearing a Green Bay Packers' helmet. .  We were named the century line because our ages totaled 100 years.  Wow, that was quite an event at the time for the one year old Duffer Hockey organization. Fast forward to last Friday when we had 2 goalies total 121 years in age!   We had a goalie alert early in the day that was answered by 60 year old Ed Waghorne who has been running the Wags Hockey team for years. Tommy Z and my son Dan have been playing for him in the Center Ice men's league.  Ed is their Czar. He collects money, brings the beer and pays the bills. We were so happy that he volunteered to give us a goalie. He was dueling against 61 year old Eddie the Anvil. We had a scoreless game going late into the first period until Dylan Nance beat The Anvil when he tapped in a rebound of a shot from the Czar to give the Whites a 1-0 lead. Ed Waghorne had a shutout going halfway through the 2nd period. The Reds had a shot get to the goal line in the 1st, but Grandpa Ken pulled it out before it crossed the line.  Our one eyed Canadian, Geno, finally solved Waghorne with a

wrist shot to tie the game with 9 minutes left in period two. The Anvil was stellar in the 2nd period so the game was tied at 1-1 after 2 periods.  T&A had a break away that Waghorne spoiled with a quick stick poke check.  T&A broke the tie early in the 3rd when Bill BTW took a pass from the Anvil and sprung T&A for another break away but this time he shot before Waghorne could reach him with his stick. Brian The Stew scored from the slot to give the Reds a 3-1 lead. Birdman Dan made it 4-1 when had a shot by Johnny Cupcake Bobka bounce off of his skate. There was no distinct kicking motion, so the goal counted. Tom O'Connor made it 4-2 when he pounced on a rebound and pushed it past The Anvil while crashing to the ice. Beak took a perfect pass from Fred "Fruitcake" Bobka and fired it at the 2 hole, but the puck bounced off of the right post. With the clock ticking down to the final minute, Crash Terry crashed the net at break neck speed and deflected a bullet pass from TO over The Anvil's shoulder to put a scare into the Reds, but with the running clock, they couldn't pull out a tie.

Memorable Moments  (2 Goals Total in 2 periods)

Bill BTW teamed up with his daughter Lillia to give the Reds a Defensive Dynamic Dual. Lillia

scored her first Duffer goal one year ago.

Ed Waghorne saved the Day for the Duffers.

Madison Road Trip January 26-28

We don't have enough skaters to play a Duffer game, so we will just do a Badger game week end.  They are fun to watch.  Two Aurora kids Sean Dhooghy and his brother Jason are freshmen. Sean played with Donny in the USA development program.  He is 5'3" and tips the scale at 139. His big brother Jason is 5 inches taller and 2 pounds heavier. The Badger Women are home that weekend too.  We have 5 guys that  need a room for Friday and Saturday.  We have 13 guys that need Tickets to Friday and Saturday men's games. We have 13 guys that need tickets to the Saturday Women's game and 6 that will be staying for the Sunday Women's game.

One year ago, Lillia Louis scored her first Duffer goal. This week, she teamed up with her Dad to help the Anvil get a thrilling 4-3 win.

Ed Waghorne answered the Goalie Alert and bailed us out.

Anthony missed his first Duffer game this season.  He had a great reason for missing, his son had his first birthday party.

Brian Stewart has been at every game this season and he has been at every post game celebration at the bar.

When I saw this cartoon that mentioned Tomas the Tank, I had a flash back that went back 14 years when Bill BTW took my grandson Michael to the CN train yard.  Michael was carried up to the cabin where he blew our ears out with the Engine's horn.

He was born on May 20, 1935.  My son Dan was born on his birthday in 1970.

We shared a lot of Muzzy pictures in the last Newsletter.

This was 1997 when we brought up Robby Granato to give the Bombers 2 Illinois ringers.  We filled most of the coach seats and avoided a fun tax.  This is the year that Muzzy shocked Hayward church goers when he came out of the church and boarded the bus with toilet paper streaming out of his pants. Read More....
