Two Hats for Steve Gaul!

June 1, 2017. Wags Vs. Ice Age  (Attendance  8)
The fans in the stands were treated to one of the most exciting Wags games ever. It was Wags versus Ice Age. Or Dan Lopatka vs. his nephews Jeff and Mike. Ed Waghorn asked me before the game if Jeff was playing and I told him that he was not going to be here because he moved out to Morris IL and it's too far of a drive for him. Ed was happy. Then when we were about to get on the Ice Jeff comes over and says, "Hi Grandpa" and Ed was no longer happy until, Mike shot a puck at his brother Jeff during warm-ups that broke his skate. Jeff went into the locker room, took off his equipment. grabbed a beer and joined us in the stands where he was heckling his brother all during the game. That's what brothers do. Ed was happy again knowing that he didn't have to face Jeff's slap shots. 3 minutes into the game Ice Age scored to take a one nothing lead but Mike "M&M" Matker  took a pass from Tony "The Tiger" Letto and tied the game with 9 minutes and 10 seconds left in the first stanza. The Ice Age scored a min

ute later, but Dan "The Man" Lopatka scored an unassisted goal a minute after that, so we had hope again with 7:45 left to play in the first period. Unfortunately, the Ice Age scored two goals to end the period and followed that with three goals in the first five minutes to open the second period. Wags was now facing a 7-2 deficit with 9:33 left in the second period. Twenty nine seconds later, Dominic "The Rover" Rovito scored an unassisted goal and then Rovito set up Lopatka who scored two minutes later to cut the deficit to 7-4. Ice Age scored 30 seconds later to dampen the excitement. 40 seconds later Brad "Spear Shooter" Murphy sprung Kyle "Killer" Sandowski  who went down and scored to make it 8 to 5 with 6:38  left in period number two.  Things were looking up,  but Ice Age scored 90 seconds later to put the brakes on the Wags rally. Then hope was rejuvenated when Wags scored 3 goals in the final 4 minutes of the period. M&M Mike scored the first one with an assist going to Steve Gaul. Killer Kyle scored with 1:55 left when he teamed up with

Kevin "smooth as" Glass. Steve "The Brawler" Gaul scored less than a minute later with an assist from Tony Letto. We now had a 9-8 squeaker going into the third period, but The Ice Age

opened the period with two quick goals making it look bad again for the Wags crew.  It looked like Wags was cooked, but Steve Gaul struck again with an assist from M&M Mike to make it 11 to 9 with 1150 left to play. Ice Age struck again and made it 12 to 9, but Steve Gaul went on a rampage scoring four straight goals in 5 minutes all four goals were listed as unassisted. He tied the game at 3:22. M&M Mike squared off with John Cerone and both of them got GFO penalties with 1:51 left in the game. Twenty Five seconds later, Dan Lopatka stripped the puck away from an attacker and gave it to Steve who scored to give Wags a 13 to 12 lead with 1:26 left to play. That was the first time in the game that Wags had the lead! Ice Age pulled their goalie and assaulted Waghorn with the number of shots but Ed kicked them all out. With 14 seconds left to play Matt "The swatter" Swastek fired a backhander to get the puck out of the zone. It looked like an icing call would stop the clock, but the puck found its way into the empty net and clinched the thrilling 14 to 12 win!

My grandson Luke and great grand kids Carmela and Lennie had a great ball hockey game going until the Wags game got interesting. Then they stopped to watch their Dads battle.

Ed "The Wall" Waghorn made 30 saves.   Jay was a healthy Scratch.
