Several students showed up on December 18th, 2011 at the Morton Arboretum to collect our GLOBE weekly atmospheric data. After examining the temperature data for the week, we went to Lake Marmo to check for freeze up. Lake Marmo had a thin sheet of ice that was covering 80% of the lake, one week later it was covered from shore to shore, but it started melting in January. We finally got back to 100% on January 25th, but we had a warm rain and started to lose it again. The lake never got ice thick enough to walk on On March 1st, it was 50% melted. |
Lake Marmo is located a short distance from our Weather Station in the Morton Arboretum. We took 3 pictures of the lake from the site located at the red arrow and then we took 3 pictures of the lake from a bridge located at the yellow arrow.

December 18, 2011 Lake Marmo had a thin coat over 80% of the lake
December 29, 2011 Lake Marmo had a thin coat over 95% of the lake
January 3, 2012 after some warm weather, Lake Marmo had a thin coat over 80% of the lake.
January 25, 2012 Lake Marmo finally reached 100% ice
January 31, 2012 after a warm rain, Lake Marmo went back to 90% ice
February 2, 2012 after more warm weather, Lake Marmo went back to 70% ice.
February 8, 2012 after temperatures dropped below freezing for 4 days, Lake Marmo went back to 80%. The section near the inlet was not frozen.
The inlet and the outlet sections were the only parts of the lake that were not frozen on February 8, 2012. |
February 15, 2012, Lake Marmo went back to 95%. The section near the inlet was not frozen. On the first day of March, the lake melted to 50%. No ice skating possible this winter.
On March 4, Lake Marmo only had 25% of the lake covered with ice. |
We had a high temperature of 20.4 Celsius on March 6, 2012 that melted any remaining ice from Lake Marmo. The pictures below show that the Lake was free of all ice. |

Information about the GLOBE program GLOBE is and
acronym for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment. GLOBE is a
global environmental program that uses the internet to share student’s
observations and measurements with GLOBE scientist and students. My Randolph School students recorded over 8000 environmental
measurements during my 6 years in the program. I was trained for GLOBE at University of
Illinois Urbana March 1995 I served as a GLOBE Teacher Trainer at the following places: University of
