Several students showed up on December 16th, 2012 at the Morton Arboretum to collect our GLOBE weekly atmospheric data. After examining the temperature data for the week, we went to Lake Marmo to check for freeze up. There was no ice on the lake. On December 23, Lake Marmo had a thin sheet of ice that was covering 80% of the lake. |
Lake Marmo is located a short distance from our Weather Station in the Morton Arboretum. We took 3 pictures of the lake from the site located at the red arrow and then we took 3 pictures of the lake from a bridge located at the yellow arrow.

I have been taking a picture every month from this site. these pictures are posted here: 3 Arboretum Trees I couldn't resist taking a picture of my new "Green" car. (I'm getting 47 miles per gallon) |
On January 2, 2013, we finally had a maximum temperature that was below 0C. That has not happened for almost a year! We had 5 more days of maximum temperatures below freezing, so Lake Marmo finally was 100% covered with ice for the first time this season. (See the data sheet below. Temperatures are recorded in Celsius)
This is where the water enters Lake Marmo and it is the last place to freeze. It finally froze up on January 6, 2013. We are expecting a warm up next week. |

We had 70 mm of rain last week. |
The Lake is now back to 80% ice coverage. |

Information about the GLOBE program GLOBE is
and acronym for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the
Environment. GLOBE is a
global environmental program that uses the internet to share student’s
observations and measurements with GLOBE scientist and students.
My Randolph School students recorded over 8000 environmental
measurements during my 6 years in the program. I was trained for GLOBE at University
